Silkies Of A Different Color

Pics
I am ecstatic that I found this thread! I started with silkies about 2 months ago. I had them 12 years ago...all you could find then commonly where white and blue. For some reason though I don't think they where bantams. Anyway...this has been such interesting reading and learning here!!

I love working with genetics and could not really find a thread that had this much info. Most had it in spurts. Also I noticed that when someone ask a question...no one made them feel like a dummy...very kind and considerate of those here who are helping others to learn.

I NEVER knew there could be this many variations. The reds?? ohhhhhhh:drool and I hate red!!! I really look forward to being a part of this thread..I only have a start for now...nothing like some of you have given us a chance to see. So..with my white, black, splash and a possible porclean, too young to tell for sure, White SGs and Porcelean SG....I have really GOT to do some serious thinking!

Now...where do I find eggs for other varities??

What colors are bred together to create a tortise shell or calico ? I've asked several people and they don't know . I thought maybe some that recognize it as a color would have more of a understanding of it's development

I think it is very pretty -- and I have had people ask if I breed them . I don't and cann't seem to find anyone that does . I've been told by those I've come across that it just happened and someone told them it was that color . The only place I have occassionally found them is at swaps and every so often someone has a auction that has one . But I've never seen chicks or eggs offered . So I guess I'm really curious my self is it a developing coloring or a oops ? ~~~~~ Tammy

Its an oops, like if a dalmatian breeder somehow got 'stripes' and called them "smudges" or "comets"- as its not a useable color pattern the pair that made the odd dog would not be bread again, the puppy fixed and sent to a pet home

There are some on here that would argue that with you. I ended up deleting all my posts in a few threads because of people getting rude just by asking a question. I know not all my silkies are show quality but I think they're pretty.

DH and I really loved this fella. I have him with sizzle hens right now to see what they put out. The hens are white with recessive black. I've never gotten a white chick from them.

So I will call him Calico. My final decision. Thanks for helping me make it.

He is beautiful. I never understand how some of these colors get the names they have anyway, in any breed chicken.

Lets give it a go to this roo.

What color would you call him? I have always kept him with black and gotten black and blueish chicks his offspring have been giving lavender offspring & gray & black and blue chicks...LOL

I'v been thinking he is a Lav split.
