Hi all!

I just saw a listing on the Atlanta Craigslist from someone in Powder Springs GA selling 2 week old silkies.
I'm brand new to chicken-keeping, and am getting my first chicks in next week. I didn't order silkies because the hatchery didn't have them available, but I was hoping to get some eventually.

1. Is it at all wise to buy from someone listing on Craigslist? I know there are some things you don't want to get off of internet listings like that...are chickens one of them? Or is this a normal way people advertise extra chicks?

2. I've read that it is possible to peaceably keep Silkies with standards if they're raised together. Is this true? What if I want roos for the different breeds? Would picking up a few chicks now save me having to build a whole nother house and run for bantams later? Or would I be better just waiting til Spring, when there are more chicks to choose from, and building another run for bantams when i decide on a reputable breeder?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I've gotten 12 out of my 16 chickens this way.

The lady's name is Mary, she breeds silkies for the fun of it, and at $1.50 per chick thats not a bad price.

I've never bought any from her, I only have standard breeds, but i've heard she was good to do business with.

She lives 1 town over from me.

Enablers!!!

I spent a silly amount of time thinking about this on New Year's Eve, now I may have to call the lady as soon as it's late enough in the day to be decent. I live a good long ways away, but might be over on that side of the state later this week.

Now I just need to figure out if it will mean being able to house them together, or will I just have to build another run more quickly...Off to research!
