silkies what to you think pic

Hello everyone,

I didn't mean to sound like I was unhappy to anyone because I am not unhappy in the least. I am very happy with these birds. I don't have a clue because I have never had silkies before and wanted any information about them anyone could tell me. It is my fault on the bid thing and would never ask for the money back, didn't, and don't feel I should. I was just making fun of myself. It doesn't bother me abit to tell on myself unlike some, I admit I am human and hope you will smile and be happy with me. They are worth it to me like I posted before and would recommend my seller to anyone. She had great response and even went so far as to ask how they were after I had them. I am very happy with these birds and just wanted to show them off for the rest of the world to see. They are very wonderful. I even posted their pictures on my facebook account because I was so happy with them, I wanted all my friends to see.

Thank you to everyone for your post. Very proud owner of my first pair of silkies.

Good for you! Those are some seriously good looking birds!! Their worth goes far beyond money, as I think you are finding out. Lucky you! I have to wait months for mine to get as big as yours! I bet you get some great eggs and maybe some beautiful babies out of them. Congrats, and welcome to life with silkies!

when do they lay? like i said, i don't have a clue. lol Will she hide her eggs from me or lay in her nest box?

Hmmmm, there are alot of ranges for silkies to start laying- most breeds of chickens will start around 5 months, give or take a few weeks, and it depends on the season, spring and summer are best (i think) But Silkies are known to wait up until 8 or 9 months of age to lay the first time!! If she has a nesting box, she may use it, or not, but try a fake egg (plastic egg, golf ball, ping pong ball, round white stone- chickens are pretty easy to fool) and she may get the idea. Also, silkies are kinda known as goooood brooders, meaning they like to sit and hatch eggs. As to whether she will hide her egg, I suppose that depends on her and you. if you let her free range and give her no hen house or box(which we all know would be certain death for her) she could lay anywhere, but if you keep an eye on her, she'll probably give you some signs and you'll probably catch her laying some fine morning! I hope she ends up laying soon for you- shes almost 5 months right? So she could start in the next few weeks! That would be cool!

I am so happy that you love them!!!

My blacks Silkies usually lay around 6-8 months, but it could be sooner. I am starting to hear some of the boys crow too. Are you keeping them in a pen or letting them free range? Free range with out protection and supervision is dangerous for silkies because they don't see well with their crest. You have a hen that will have a large crest so will have difficulty seeing a predator.

Agree with Crested. My girls usually don't lay until 7-8 months. They are definitely behind other breeds. And most times the boys are WAY behind boys of other breeds in sexual maturity. My experience is that they start crowing around 6-7 months and don't start actively breeding until 10-12 months. Now I'm sure it is VERY individual...but my boys are very "typey"...and my meaning of that is that they look very much like the girls until they get to be 4-5 months old. Then I begin to see a few streamers and they begin to grow a very small comb. Typically I can't know FOR SURE until at least 5-6 months...and a few even older.

Crested Horizon has some gorgeous silkies and you can be sure that you got an excellent pair of silkies from them. Silkie breeders will not risk their reputation selling birds that aren't at least breeder quality unless they specifically state that the birds is pet quality and note the deficiencies. Not every silkie that is hatched is a show quality bird (my meaning of that is that they could compete at sanctioned shows) but that doesn't mean they can't produce some show quality birds.
