Thank you everyone for the leads and support... I was beginning to feel a little discouraged but now have renewed hope that I'll be able to pull something together for my students (and my flock) this spring! My two broody silkies will be eager participants with this project

Welcome to backyard chickens! I have silkies too. They are an awesome breed! If you don't mind the poor quality of the silkies, many hatcheries sell fertile hatching eggs which can be shipped to you. You could check craigslist as well. If you would like show quality, here are some places:
