Silly broodies

I thought it was just me! I have 2 broody silkies and they're both from this year, born in April. I didn't think they were old enough to go the distance, but one of them has been tight on her golf balls for 2 1/2 weeks now.

Will a broody sit until something hatches or do they give up after 3 weeks? I don't know if I should give them eggs at this late date or try to break them.

It really depends on the bird. Most will break it up themselves, after it's been too long, but my dad had an OEG hen that sat on her eggs for 6 weeks (2 different sets, first and second ones were no good), then went back to an empty nest! He finally felt sorry for her, and went and bought some day old chicks for her.

Thank you!!! I think I'll give them both some eggs, my blue silkie just started and the white one has been at it for 2 1/2 weeks, so if the white one quits the blue one can finish the job.

I knew Silkies were broody, so I opted to invest in them instead of a incubator/brooder, but I didn't expect them to start brooding until spring! What kind of mother decides to start a family now?
