Hi, I am a newbie who has six SF Chicks. I didn't buy a Rooster because of the crowing around my neighbors
and now I am being told that without having one I will not get eggs from the Hens. I know I would not get
babies but thought I would get eggs. Help dispell my fears or tell me to go out & buy a Roo. Please.

Whomever told you that is in error. You will get eggs. You do NOT need a rooster to tell the hens when and where to lay eggs. The only thing is without a rooster, you cannot have fertilized eggs and thus, no hatching chicks.

Welcome to the world of chickens and the BYC!

Hens' biology is such that they produce eggs...just like we do :) They'll keep coming whether they're fertilized or not, so not to worry!

Thank you, thank you. It is what I thought but then when you hear others...doubts come in.
This site is so helpful to so many. It is kind of others to share their knowledge.. Thanks!

My hens haven't been around a rooster for eight months and still getting lots of eggs. Whoever thinks that you can't get eggs without a rooster needs to actually raise chickens before they start giving advice.

General Rule of Thumb:

Ignore all advice about chickens/eggs except what you read on this site. That "no eggs without a rooster" is an oldie and tough to stamp out. There are lots of others, too, so don't listen. Double check everything at BYC.
