I'm in upstate SC, and my silkie hen started laying egg a few weeks ago. I was told by my FinLaw to bring the eggs in at night because the cold could hurt them. Is this a good idea? If it is, my plan was to bring the new eggs in until she decides to start sitting or it gets warmer. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

That's what it did with my silkie hen last year. The roo would wind up breaking them if I didn't. She was like clockwork going broody after laying for 3 weeks even with no eggs in the nest. Once she went broody, I gave her the eggs back. Good luck!

If she is not broody (ready to sit) bring the eggs in - you will need an incubator if you want them to hatch.

The eggs can sit in the house for 1 week w/o losing any hatching viability. after 1 week the chance of them hatching starts to go down.

If she is broody - leave them be - she will care for them & keep them warm.

Unfortunately there is no way to make a hen go broody - she may not until spring .

Collect all the eggs an fill the nest with golf balls. Assuming she sleeps on roost, when you go out at night an she is on the nest it is time to put the eggs back. It may take till spring.
