This is my first time with chickens and I’m still learning so, sorry for my newbie questions! Haha. My ladies are 17 weeks old. Three white Leghorns and three black Australorps. I have two leghorns that have big, bright red combs and wattles and both laid their first eggs yesterday. (Yay!!) My other Leghorn does not have much of a comb or wattles at all and she still looks very much like a pullet. The Leghorns are all the same age and they are all the same size but the one just doesn’t seem to be maturing as fast as the other two. Is this normal? Each animal is different so I’m sure she will just mature at her own rate.. I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t anything else to look out for since she isn’t maturing at the same rate as her counterparts. Any illnesses or anything...
I was also wondering about my Australorps... their combs and wattles are small but very red and they are very large birds. They aren’t squatting or anything like the two leghorns that just started laying. I’ve heard that chickens will start to lay if they see others in their flock laying... is this true? None of my other pullets really seem ready to lay yet. Just because two of them have started, doesn’t mean that they will all start soon does it?
