Silly question, will my young quail figure out how to get down from perch??

Hi All,

I put my quail into it's aviary/coop yesterday. After it walked around for a bit it flew up into where I have shelf and it's stuffed animal (it thinks it's the mom) Now little quail hasn't come down. I'm getting a bit worried that going up is no problem for gambel's but coming down might be. I put a couple of large apple tree branches in there so it could use that if needed. Do they finally figure out how to come down?? I don't want the poor thing starving or getting dehydrated. I leaned a piece of wood one the end and side hoping maybe that would help. Nope.

Here's my coop. It's 6' long, 5' wide and 6ish' tall.

It might be a little intimidated with the height -- if what you've put in there has not been slanted too steeply, it should be able to get itself down all right when it's ready. Maybe just enjoying the view and feeling like Top Bird meanwhile!

You could also see about luring it down with food, putting a dish in and tapping your finger on the dish to attract its attention. The parent birds tap their beaks on the ground when foraging and this is how the babies learn to run to the parents to see what is being eaten and feed themselves.

Thank you. I Will give the tapping a try. I even took my laptop and played a you tube video with quails eating and making noise in hopes of luring it down. Lol. Finally I just. Went in and tried to coax him to,fly out of the "safety zone" and it kind of flew/fell down onto one of the branches and then to the ground. I know it can fly because while I had it in the house the little guy got by me a couple of times while cleaning it's box and flew up onto my hutch. But maybe it takes a while to get the accuracy right.

I found a YouTube video of Gambel quail eating and running around, making noises -- I play that for my little guy once or twice a week when he's out and he loves it, gets all excited, runs around looking behind everything for "those quail", LOL! Wonder if it's the same one you use ....

That's funny! Could be. I think it's titled funny quail sounds or something like that. It's a good size video. River (that's what I have named this little guy) did make it down and back up to and from its roost today all by itself. Yay!!

Wow, just checked YouTube and it IS the same video, LOL! Good for River, he learns pretty fast :)
