Stopped by our local farm and ranch store this morning. They have some SLW's that are the same age as our 8 other girls - 4 BR and 4 BO. I'm thinking about adding 4 more birds to have an even dozen, and I'm intrigued by the SLW's. Do they have good personalities (quiet, easily handled, and pretty calm)? And are they good, consistent layers?

Many thanks in advance.

Mine are a bit more stand offish than other breeds I have but they are not flighty. They have laid well but not great. I get about 4 eggs a week from each of them and they stopped during the fall with molt but have started back now. I catch mine up about once a month to check weights and check skin for parasites. I haven't had any trouble and mine free ranged until I recently put them up for breeding.
I love them so much I have 2 dz in the 'bator from 2 different breeders, too.

Mine are very friendly and calm birds, but they're from breeders not a hatchery. Took them till they were 32/33 weeks old to start laying and have been laying well since. I've got the first group of chicks hatching out from them now so I'll be excited to see how their chicks look and do. Hopefully their parents nice lacing and good body type will follow thru to their chicks.

I have had a Silver Laced Wyandotte since last September and love her to pieces! She is gorgeous, a good layer, and has a great personality. I routinely pick her up and hold her and she seems to like it. She loves to follow me around. I also have a gold laced wyandotte and love her too!

I am a newbie to chicks in general but here is my 2 cents ...

I have eleven Silver Laced Wyandottes and they are 25 days old now. I spend a lot of time each day with them but they still have not warmed up to me and no one likes to be handled still.

At this young age they do want to fly out of the brooder (reptile tank) every time I take the top off , to roost on the top of the tank. So I still wonder how flighty mine will be. I hear they are not flighty.

They are very full of life they and make me laugh a lot.

thanks all for the replies. maybe i'll stick with more buff orps and barred rocks. i've always been partial to them since my grandfather raised them when i was younger, and they remind me of him.
