Hey everyone! Happy new year and I hope everyone is covid-free. Our flock is doing really well but we're facing our least lethal hurdle to date

Our Silver Leghorns can get clear of our 6' run fence. When we go to clip their feathers however, their primary feather stems still look very red/black. The birds are 5 months old so I didn't expect the feathers to still be growing.

Is this color expected for this breed? Is there a better way to know when it's safe to clip?

Thanks!!

I dont really understand what you means by red/black, but here is hw to tell what to cut. Only the primary feathers should be cut

Pics would help here.
At 5 month they still maybe growing out.
Maybe clip each feather carefully a bit at a time,
if you get a bleeder pluck that feather fully out to stop bleeding.
