Hi all

Just wondering if you could provide advice on breeding a pencilled rooster with a laced hen both silver.

Thanks

Make sure to keep your roo's fertility up! The R1 variation of the rose comb mutation broke off a part of the sperm motility gene next to it when it occured, so it's important to do all you can to keep it up. My boy has an average fertilization rate of about 80%. These articles are my holy grail on the subject:

Also, depending on whether you feel like hand expressing semen for artificial insemination or not, you'll want to make sure the rooster's libido is normal and that he can mount the hen effectively and cleanly. I always give my birds a maintenance clip on their butt down to reduce manure buildup on eggs and feathers and to provide a cleaner, more efficient "pasture" breeding process.
