I have a SSH that will be 7 months old in 5 days. She has not started laying yet. The orpington and partrigde rock started laying 3 weeks ago. Is it common for the SSH to be slow to start laying? Should I be concerned?

From what I have read, Hamburgs mature very early, but I've never raised them. Is there a reason to be worried? I'm sure she'll start when she's ready. If she's not exhibiting signs of illness, I'm not sure what the problem is, although I understand that waiting for that first egg is like a little kid waiting for Santa Claus.

Yes, in general they have a reputation for laying early and often, but there is a lot individual variation within a breed. I have only 1 hamburg -- a great layer of very small eggs (only slightly bigger than bantam eggs), but extremely high strung.

and I have three silver spangled hamburgs (two pullets and a roo) and they're all pretty mellow. I think every chicken is different and they'll lay when they're ready. My SSH roo crowed for the first time the other day and he's only 10 weeks... have a silver laced wyandotte of the same age and not a peep out of him. As long as they're healthy I wouldn't worry too much yet.

Thanks for all the advice.I am new to chickens and my other 2 are laying and she is not. BUT she is very how shall I put this STUPID acting, so maybe she needs some time. I do now hte other chicks that came with her are laying so maybe there is still hope for her.
