I got my first chickens about 3 months ago. They were a bit of a COVID-19 impulse buy, but we had been considering getting chickens for several months. I have five pretty chickens: 2 Rhode Island Red, 2 Barred Rock, and 1 Buff Orpington. I love being able to watch them play, and I love that my toddler gets to learn how to care for and interact with animals. I had stumbled across BYC while doing research, and finally decided to join because I SWEAR one of me Barred Rocks is a rooster (despite mixed opinions from friends and the store where I got him/her). I can't have roosters in my city, so I'm wondering if I need to take steps to sell him/her.

When I'm not taking care of my toddler or chickens, I like baking bread and watching sci-fi movies. I currently work in higher education and am excited to start a master's program this fall!

If your birds are 3 months old it should be fairly easy to determine gender. Feel free to post a picture here or start a new thread in the Breed and Gender forum.

Thanks DobieLover! I posted some pics of one of my birds there. Just over 12 weeks old and so far it looks like a roo to everyone. Time to get a Craigslist posting ready!
