Simulated Natural Nest Incubation~Experiment #1 So it begins....

He's a very glossy black, his beak is very shiny black as well and he has very long wings for a new chick. I'm calling him Hootie..as in Hootie and the Blowfish..because he sings very well.

He looks very BA more than Cochin, thank goodness.

Truly one of the most rewarding sights ever. You are the first. Love it.

yea!!! So excited for you!!!! I put mine out in the brooder box on the carport today and been going back and forth checking to make sure the temps are staying warm enough. I put plastic over the top since it's hardware cloth but left a small opening.

Okay, folks...another learning moment for me. I've only ever seen chicks hatched by a broody or that came in the mail or from a TSC, so bear with me....I've only ever seen them after they have been hatched for some time, are dry and fully functioning, ready for action. This chick is dry but seems very tired and does not stand up yet...normal? Cheeps, open the eyes a little but seems sleepy and hasn't tried to stand flat on its feet yet or push up with its legs. Legs are not splayed but remain curled up under him with toes curled, which leaves this chick flat on his chest and face. Nudging him results in some flapping, cheeping and flopping around but no standing...normal?
yep normal Bee. It takes a whole lotta energy for them to get out of the shell and they're exhausted for awhile.

It's kinda fun!

The other eggs have not pipped, the chick is now dry and getting stronger but still tired. He is down for the night under the warmth of the heating pad and tomorrow I'll get him out a little for some exercise and leg strengthening. He's got some pretty coloring and is a clean legged bird, which makes me glad for him...those feathered feet are a liability.
yes they are Bee, or in my opinion they are. I worry about bugs getting on them worse. Just don't like those for me.

I loved you clucking to your baby to. Too cute! They say they have to constantly stay warm like 90 or a little above in temp but on mine I did 90 with a 60 watt bulb and then lowered the wattage the second week to 40 watt red bulb but since I moved them outside today I put that 60 watt one back in there since this brooder box is larger and it's outside to. But anyway they say drop the temps by 5 degrees each week but I always do it with 10 degrees and they have always done fine but every set up is different I guess.

good luck Bee.
