Simulated Natural Nest Incubation~Experiment #1 So it begins....

she's probably too busy with baby smell to deal with us stinky old chicken people.
Ah, baby smell... I remember that. And sweet smelling saliva... and sweet smelling poop, even...

I think that since she's not posting, she's just a bit busy... which is a good thing. Amazing, no matter how many decades ago that a Mom gives birth, there are some memories of it that remain fresh, and never go away. For me it's pacing the floor, hanging my head out the window, listening to the birds singing, and ice melting off the eaves, cause I couldn't stand the smell of the tuna fish sandwiches hubby and the Dr were eating for lunch.

So...no news of the baby yet?

Can't wait to see pics!

Was watching the Hootie Hatch running around like cotton balls all over the brooder today...they are so entertaining to watch. Just darling! They are loving the nipple water bucket, the fermented feed and also the heating pad brooder heater...they love that most of all. Saw some of them warming up on top of it towards evening but even before the big chickens go to roost, those babies are hidden under the heated hut...not a chick in sight. I LOVE this method of providing heat to them...so very natural and cozy for them than that light glaring down on them and having to turn it on and off as the day gets warm and the night gets cool. The heating pad can stay on all day long without causing the brooder to get too warm...it's lovely!

Listed the Hootie Hatch in the locals today, to come out on Wednesday. Selling them and the parent stock to make way for the new birds coming along, the ducks coming later and also any chicks I hatch out from breeding these WRs. This will be the first time I've ever sold birds to the public and it will be hard, imagining what kind of homes they may end up in. I'll just have to turn off my mind to that and give them over to the Lord, trusting that He will see them through their lives and take care of their day to day well-being.

I think one of my Dels is leaning towards a little broody behavior....I would LOVE it if she were so I could hatch out some WRs under her. I'm so ready to let the professionals get back to hatching the chicks.

I hope it's not broody envy.......or wishful thinking. Good Luck with that, Bee!

Did i miss something here or what? I didn't see any nest #4 Hootie pics nor read a summary for this experiment.

I had to snicker at that comment Bee. Here I am with TWO BA's and I am incubating them in the bator. lol IF I allow these to sit ALL of those BA's will be broody on me and I only have FOUR nest PLUS I'll lose all those eggs.

Yes these chicks are so cute to watch aren't they? I really need to get me one of those heating pads for this. I have 42 eggs in the bator and will candle them probably tomorrow. I think that will be the 10th day if I am remembering right. I sure HOPE I have a few fertile in there. lol

Haven't done it yet....what with the holiday and other family things going on, I've yet to get a good vid or to sit down and right it all up. I did a vid but realized afterward I had the brooder net over the brooder throughout the whole thing so it's filmed through green mesh plastic...not good for visualizing much. I'll do a better one and post it and some stills when I get a chance. I'll try to do something in the next few days on a video and pics and then the right up later on in the week, or sooner if things slow down here....we are in the thick of too many irons in the fire, if you know what I mean.

I had posted a few pics of the first chick hatched in that Nest 4 but haven't taken anymore stills of the others...and "still" is a laughable term when applied to these chicks...they are never still and the brooder is large, so getting them to hold still for a pic will be quite the effort. I'll have to try and catch them all and put them in a basket to take a pic as a group.

Whenever I get a broody, Rosemarie, I just move them to a safe nest in a broody pen where they can brood in peace and quiet. It doesn't even have to be an elaborate structure, just a quiet corner away from the bustle of the main parts of the coop(feeder, waterer, roosts, laying boxes, etc.). I've even just turn a bushel apple basket on its side for a broody nest...it worked well enough. You can make a nest out of just about anything.

I really really need to make me one of those broody pens Bee. I was thinking about that yesterday because all of my pens we have made, the tops lift up on them or the last one we made for a broody breaker pen has the door in the side with wire sides and wire bottom. I could use that one and she could come and go when she wanted off the nest. BUT this thing is mega heavy to have to move. ughhh need to get me another box I guess for a brooder breaker box and just put the other one some where away from their pen and leave it. Yeah I have seen all sorts of things people use for nests, even 5 gallon buckets. :)

Good morning, since your either in bed or headed soon I will let you know tomorrow came. I remember when 12 21 12 hit my kids stayed online watching different time zones say they had lived lol. Reminded me of when my son was little and it was the 9999 scare for computers going crazy, he asked me if we were all going to die. I told him it really didnt matter cause if not you wake up and if we did well we wouldnt care being as we would be in a new place. Funny the little things you remember looking back over your childs lifetime.
Anyway see no word from new mommy lets all pray she is doing well, chickens dont smell lol but their poop does! Cleaned up the hay I put down for my babies to play in and think I will compost it in the small garden out by my compound gate. 7 ft walls are great for privacy but I hate no being able to see around me at ground level. Living on the 3rd floor might be harder on me but at least I can look out my windows and see across the walls to the fields where alfalfa is growing, animals in the various yards and my bil tending sheep. Price on land and homes is crazy here. Before if you owned more than 1 dwelling per family you had to hide it, land was left undeveloped cause if someone saw it, it could be taken away from you. That is part of our problem here. The family stayed in this house to keep it from being taken, but its a starter home not meant for years down the line unless u never have kids. Most like this dont even have two bedrooms. You move once you have kids of your own and your parents stay as caretakers. But anyway were are stuck with a 3rd floor hubby cant come up to anymore, little money to buy a new home or even land, and much that he should have inherited either taken by the government over the years or his greedy youngest brother who thinks we are not entitled to anything since we werent here 32 yrs. 5000 meters can sell for millions now. And our family is one of the oldest in the city so we have many seaside properties that investors are haggling for and all the bil can see is dollar signs. That is once its gotten back from the illegal dealings of the government. Then you got issues of drinkable water, no electricity, no paved roads, no sewers and no phone system. Oh and forget mail! This area 8 miles outside of the Capitol use to be farmland. Crops watered by wells of sweet fresh water, but it was destroyed by infusion of saltwater into the ground water aquifers. For fresh water we have to buy it at 20 cents a liter. Bottled or pumped into holding tanks. Our house has a few surviving wells but I have no idea on water quality.
Looking for a house here is interesting since im a retired realtor. Before you could not sell a home, it stayed in the family or you lost it. Now people got freedom ive seen 15 houses go up in my neighborhood alone. No building codes, you get someone to plan and build if your poor you do it yourself. Ive watched construction on these places. Primative unless you got money. Before even cement was regulated to government use first and you waited for allotments of cement maybe years building one level or rooms at a time. Then dont get me on plumbing, water and electric needs. Im trying to observe life as it is for the common person. Humbling at best.
