Simulated Natural Nest Incubation~Experiment #1 So it begins....

Hi Bee,

I'm a new subscriber to this forum and have been keeping up with your hard work and trials. I pray this cooling off period will make them stronger and the best of luck to you!!!

Thank you!!

Hang in there Bee. If they weren't at 104 for very long, they might still be ok. In fact, they might be thankful for that following temp drop.

Probably...the temp spike was only for mere minutes and then I caught it and opened the nest completely up and aired it out until temps dropped.

I couldn't wait until tonight...took my strongest chick, #11, and went to the dark closet. It took awhile to see the movement but there was definitely movement! Let's hope this didn't retard growth in some way to give me deformed chicks.

I don't think you'll get deformed chicks from 80*. Like others have said, they have found their eggs completely cold and though this retards hatching, it doesn't damage the chick. If you only had 104 for a few minutes, they'll probably be fine! No worries, mate!

Thank you!

I could really see the blood veins on this candling...the air cell is starting to tilt just since I saw it last! Just by a tiny fraction.

I agree, Bee, your chickies will be fine. I had a good bator hatch last spring after temp spikes, and 2 lengthy outages, and one "my bad" unplugging the bator to candle, and forgetting to plug it back in. I don't believe the candling will hurt them a bit.

Didn't think so...

Some folks on these boards candle every day with an actual candling devise and they do fine. I may have to provide them with tiny white canes and a seeing eye kitten though.

I use my dads old slide projector and I have never had a problem, sometimes candle every day atleast a few eggs, I cannot help myself..

I doubt the temp spike did them any harm, I have had the same issue in everyone of my incubations... the temp drop may delay your hatch by a day but again, shouldn't be a problem

Now, that's interesting!! What a great use for it! I love it when we can repurpose old things like that and I bet that is very bright for the purpose. We need a thread about repurposing/recycling things into new and wonderful jobs, don't we? Like this heating pad....and slide projectors, water wigglers, bleach jugs, rain guttering, miter boxes, etc.

I actually got the idea on this forum somewhere, My husband had made a homemade candler but we soon found out that it got way to hot... In doing a bit of research here I came across a thread on using old projectors and thought, hey I have one of those!!! It works great, I take a cardboard roll from a roll of TP and fit it over the light and it funnels the light perfectly.

I was right with you til you said miter boxes. What have you repurposed a miter box for?
