Are these chickens naturally skittish? I had gotten chicks a week and a half ago and they are very flighty whenever I am around them. It doesn't matter how long I hang around. They will all move to the furthest end of the brooder and if I make any sudden moves, you'd have thought I fired a gun - jumping, running, half flying around. I don't handle them at all now that I placed them in a bigger brooder, because I can't get close enough to one to pick it up. Not to mention they are very fast.

Give them time and spend as much of it as you can with them

They'll learn to love you

Most strains of leghorns tend to be somewhat more skittish than the heavier standard birds. 30 years ago I had a strain of single comb light brown leghorn bantams from Fred Hall in Chester, NJ. They were mellow and beautiful birds. He had very stringently selected against flightiness and had a beautiful strain of show birds.
