Random question...

We just got an adorable young silver laced Wyandotte cockerel with a single comb to run with our flock. Our hens are all Rhode Island Reds and Plymouth Barred Rocks.

I've heard that the single comb is a recessive gene with the Wyandotte, but how recessive is it? Neither the Rhode Island reds or the Plymouth barred rocks should have Rose comb genes, so if I breed this rooster with my hens, am I pretty well guaranteed a single comb?

I don't really care either way, but I'm soooo curious! Here's a pic of the little guy. (His name's Arslan)

Rose comb is completely dominant over single comb, so if a bird has even a single copy of it (and no other comb genes), it will have a rose comb. Breeding a single-combed Wyandotte to single-combed hens will only produce single-combed offspring.

He'll also make sexlinks with the Barred Rocks, where only the male chicks will have a white spot on the back of their heads at hatch and females will not have that spot, so that may be useful for later on down the line.

Thanks so much for reminding me of this thread! Arslan is doing well! He's looking very grown up and has a lovely crow.

He is acting like a bit of a randy teenager, which is driving the pullets nuts, but he IS a young rooster... I'm hoping he mellows out as he grows up. He's dancing and tidbitting, just doesn't wait for a yes. And he's still a snuggle bunny all while protecting the ladies.

here's some updated pictures and a video of his crow!
