my chicken adventure started with six cute fluffy yellow chicks. i babied them horribly and now they follow me around, with some distractions but not many. well one does anyway, i have two obnoxious dogs that howl and screech like banshees, so my mother brought them with her to pick me up from work. they were about 12 weeks old and the stress from the ride left them nearly dead. we didn't realize it until she went to put them in their pen and two of them passed, three were not doing well at all and one was in shock but able to walk fine. we worked on the three, but another one died and so we brought them in the house. i worked on reviving one of the chickens for over an hour before it died as well. that left us with two, one out of the two died while i was at work. i still have one of my babies, but i'm still devastated about my other five... ironically i work at a chicken fast food place. my boss found out what happened and offered to give me a couple of his chickens. unfortunately the two are already laying and my baby is still 12 weeks, so there is at least a 6 week difference. we named the red one sunrise(i wanted to name her ninja because she has a broken beak) the black one is pepper(mom said she looks like a buzzard, how rude) and my baby is queeny (because she was queen of the flock) anyway i think that sums everything up...

Wow, that is quite an introduction to raising chickens! Well done. Had to giggle about the chicken fast food comment because I rehab owls and other raptors. Glad you joined the flock.

Sorry for your losses, baby chicks are very frail. Glad you joined the Backyard chickens flock which should turn your chicken luck around. The Learning Center is a great place to start a chicken education. You may also like "Raising Backyard chickens," forum. We are here to answer your questions. How can we assist you today?

Welcome to BYC!

So sorry to hear of your losses, that's always tough. We have a wonderful emergency/disease forum here if you ever need help again:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

You can integrate your existing chickens with other birds if you're careful (and maybe around the same size would be best). There's an excellent article in the Learning Center that walks through the steps:

Good luck to you, nice to have you here!
