Sink side bucket

For years we've used ice cream buckets to collect our kitchen scrapes. The buckets begin to stink over time. I'd like to get one that could be washed and no more stink. A large crock with sealed lid would be great about one gallon size. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks Rodger

You can buy actual crocks made just for collecting food scraps that have carbon filters built into the lid. I have seen them at garden stores, and in catalogs.

FYI, the carbon filters really don't work. Tried it.

I just got a blue bucket from the $1 store and put that Press & Seal plastic wrap over it. It has a nylon rope handle and I take it out every few days to the compist (that I just put up).

FYI TIP ! If you have a Paper shredder (I just got one) It works WONDERS on keeping the bucket on the drier side making it a bit less smelly.

I dump in composter and then rinse with rain water on my way back in. Dump wash water into garden as I go by

Do you mean the plastic itself began to smell?


If so I'd reccomended a stainless steel bucket

I use one of the metal crocks made for counter top food waste and it has a filter in the lid. I use compost liners that are biodegradable so when it's time to add it to the compost pile, I just throw the scraps and the bag into the pile. The bags break down pretty fast.

I think the key is to make sure and just empty it regularly.

I've seen the crocks and the stainless steel ones, my concern is the filter in the lid. Yes the plastic begins to smell. I take the scrapes out to the chickens when it gets full every couple days. I pretty much want the crock without filter and a sealed lid. When I empty it throw it in the dishwasher it comes out clean with no smell

I simply use a plastic Folger's coffee can with lid. I hose it out. If you keep the lid on it, and dump it every 48 hours or so, the smell should not be a real issue, unless you have a sensitive nose. Also, coffee grounds are great for covering any materials that might be offensive! Most veggie scraps go to the chickens, anyways. So, there's the compost compost, the chicken compost, the worm compost, the flush it down the toilet compost...
