I am new to Back Yard Chickens and have read many post. I finally decided to join.
A bit confused yesterday as our Gracie turned out to become Sir Grace. He was caught after a neighbor couldn't catch it and said if you can you can keep it. Well we caught it and put it in with our girls, Laverne and Shirley.
We just cleaned out their roost just a little while ago and discovered two small scorpions and other bugs. Do we need to worry about these?
We love our chickens and rooster. We have many big brown eggs and enjoy sharing them with family and neighbors.
Looking forward to getting to know others who are beginning on this journey.
Thanks

! Pleased you joined us! Don't know if scorpions are hazardous to chickens or not - I've read from other folks on BYC how their chickens kill and eat the things! I really don't know if getting stung is detrimental to them so don't go by what I say. You might ask in the predators & pest thread below. Good luck to you!

Well as long at those things don't sting me I guess I will not worry about that. I hate scorpions and have been stung by a few. Not a pleasant thing to happen to you.
I am so thrilled with the post about my problem. Looking forward to keeping touch with many. Thanks for your info.

The smaller the scorp, the deadlier it is. I learned this from my mother who lived in Arizona her whole life. Whether they are dangerous to birds is another story.

Carry a black light with you and the scorp will glow like a radio active beacon. Black lights can be purchased just about anywhere, Home Depot might be a good place to start. Carry some tongs with you to pick them up and deposit them in the trash or a big rock to smoosh them with.

because Scorps are nocturnal, it is hard for your birds to see them. They hide under rocks during the day, so if you have any rocks or areas a scorp can hide under during the day, remove them from the coop area.
