Ive personally never had any chickens injured by carrying them this way. like i said its the easiest way for me. when hung upside down they calm right down.
another method i have used is to pull both wings up and grab them right where they connect into the chest.
 
I was once told to hang them upside down to dust them when I first started out. A few did fine and then I tipped one over and had her throw up and end up weezing for a long time. I have read multiple accounts of this happening and warnings. Do whatever works for you but I personally avoid it.
 
I see absolutely no reason to carry them that way. Mine are perfectly fine when picked up and held normally. They don't flap and are perfectly quiet most of the time. They only time they go upside down is when they are in the killing cone.
