I'm a new chicken mama, have a Rhode I Red that has been sitting on nest for couple of days..got 1 egg from unnder her-did not put up a fuss just kind of caw real lightly. I don't know if she getws up or not as I can't keep an eye on them very long at a time, but she is on nest everytime I go in?? She is about 6-7 mos old. Help..am getting worried. Thanks

Hi New Chick Mama.
She's probably gone broody, and she wants to sit on eggs. If you have a rooster her eggs will be fertile and she'll hatch out some chicks. And don't worry, she gets off the nest once or twice a day... eats and drinks and poops. There are a couple of methods that you could search to try and stop her broodiness - you could search our forum.

As for me, I've got two broody hens right now and I'm letting them hatch out some chicks.

It's great when they do all the work.

She might be broody, though RIR's aren't known for it. Are you finding huge (like med. dog size) stinky poos in the coop/run area? If you are then she's probably broody, if not I'd repost in the emergencies section. Be sure to read the sticky at the top of the emergencies section and copy/paste the questions to your post. Answer as many of the questions as you can and post a picture too if possible. The more info. you give us the better will be able to help.

Hey ya'll
Thanks for all the input, but as a new chicken mama, I've learned she is brooding..my husband saw her out of her nest box for a while. Just a little too anxious I guess..Ya'll are the greatest and thanks again

20 days til hatchlings! Keep her food and water nearby... and beware cause boy they can be a bit nasty when you come too close - so tread softly or ya might get pecked.

And good luck.
