Six double yolkers...trillion to one odds

My new hens all started out with double yolkers. I'm certain that I've pulled 3 out in one day of 8 eggs. A trillion to one odds seems high to me comparably.

I have an EE who lays a double yolker every other day. It drives me crazy because her eggs are such a beautiful blue, that I want to put a few in the bator, but I'm not going to put a double yolker in there.

I'd agree. I had a little girlie who fairly consistently dropped double yolkers on me so when some of the others happen to drop one on the same day, it's nothing to have three double yolkers in a day. And I can't even imagine how many double yolk eggs I have in the average 18 hole egg carton.

Has anyone heard of a double yolker hatching two chicks? I would imagine there wouldn't be enough room for two embryos to develop.

There is a post on the duck area of the forum where a woman hatched a double yoked egg and I think it has been done with chickens. I think generally though, one of the babies is weaker than the other and doesnt make it?

With my BA when she started laying, the first 10 eggs she laid were double yolkers. I didn't think much about it because a lot of people on BYC said it was normal for a new layer to lay double yolkers at first until her body got regulated.

But I haven't had one since.

I get them frequently--- although less often now that the girls have matured. In fact, the first dozen eggs I gave to my sister had 10!!!! She thought I did it on purpose--- I told her I had no way to tell--- what were the odds of that happening! Since these were store bought it is amazing that with all the quality control she ended up with six out of six!
