Size of eggs?

Is it normal for a hen's egg to change sizes? Or should I assume a different hen laid this one?

The egg on the right is the size we have got for the last seven days in a row. Then today I found the one on the left in the same nest that Candie has been laying in. But this egg is huge compared to the last seven...

From what I have read on BYC and "Raising Chickens for Dummies" that new layers, eggs start off smaller and take a few weeks of laying before they get to normal size.

wow... thats huge then... the first ones barely fit in a large size egg carton. I should have put my hand in the pic.
The big one I got today will not fit in the egg carton.
Are "homemade" chicken eggs normally this large? lol

Chickens lay different sizes of eggs at different times in their lives and even different seasons. Here's an example of just some of the sizes of eggs I got one day a couple of weeks ago. All of my birds are standard size layers, no bantys. The one on the left is a jumbo egg that won't fit in a carton. The one on the right is a pullet egg.

Eggs from older hens are larger, and we get larger eggs in the spring and smaller eggs when it's really hot out, like now.

Hens adapt to their surroundings, hot weather will cut down the number and size of the eggs. During winter, you will tend to find cold weather can cut down egg size dramatically or even stop it all together. Diet can affect egg size too, hens who eat a special layer's diet end up with larger eggs than those who have a mixed diet, even if they are the same breed.

However, by the looks of the eggs, I think another hen might have laid that one. If you notice the eggs are changing constantly then there must be another hen involved, if not, perhaps your hen had a funny day or two.

The size can change during the year for the same hen. This spring, I was getting super-extra-jumbo eggs from about 12 of my hens. When we got the super hot weather, we stopped getting the super jumbos all together. Now, this fall, they seem to have settled down and are producing large to extra large eggs. These hens are in their second year, so they're well past the pullet egg stage.

We had a duck egg just today actually that was a nearly an ounce bigger than any of the three previous eggs. The jump was from about 2oz. to almost 3oz. I don't know if the size will be back to normal tomorrow or not, but I do know it was from the same duck as we just have the one female duck and she was penned overnight.

Well that one super sized egg we had, was from the same hen. Candie is our only hen laying yet...
The egg was a double yolker, returned to normal size next day and every day after that.
She went 16 days straight giving us an egg every day with that double yolker in the middle of that. Took one day off and is back to laying everyday.
