sizing a riding helmet for a 8 year old ???

You might want to be a little leery of used helmets. Helmet are suppose to be replaced if they have had any type of impact, you will have no way of knowing that with a used helmet. They also should be replaced every 5 years as the interior material breaks down with age. They can seem expensive, but after one significant fall from a horse, their cost does not seem like a big price to pay for added protection.

On used helmets, it definitely is not ideal. It's better than nothing, but probably not by much. If the helmet has been in an accident, the internal padding, the firmer stuff that really does the job of absorbing concussion, gets compressed(the sponge pads are for comfort and snug fit, it's the firmer stuff that saves the head). When the internal padding is compressed, it cannot do its job.

If a black velvet look is desired, most helmets can be fitted for a cover made of black velvet.

not putting a price on my childs safety. I am very very picky about that stuff for my kids. very.

Apparently helmets are like car seats, shouldn't reuse. Sometimes people advertise helmets as new, but, aren't as they are not in a store, but, I have seen some advertised as 'never been used' I have a icky factor too about buying a used helmet, is kind of gross really. I do prefer brand new. That way I know where the helmet has been.

Our one equine store had only one english helmet in stock (or to be seen) and it was a much higher ticket then 55$.
It seems like alot more $$ when you don't have the horse yet .

I think once I get that special horse , the helmet will be easy to buy , as it will be well used !!

I would not buy a used helmet. You never know if the seller is being truthful about what that helmet has been through. Also, a helmet should be replaced every five years, accidents or no.

I hope you find the perfect helmet for your daughter!
