This is Welan, our little house chicken we hatched from our first flock. She started laying at 17 weeks and today layed her 39th straight egg. She hasn't taken one day off since she started, I'm thinking it may be because she is so spoiled. Does anyone else have chickens that just won't take a break?

I don't have any that don't take breaks, but I just wanted to welcome you to BYC and also say have fun with your house chicken, I love when a chicken is especially friendly to people!

This is my chicken Friend before she started doing that same thing. Everyday she would sit in the nest, trying to warm the eggs. She was fatter than usual and she even croaked at me every time I poked my head into the coop. Friend has stopped now. If you want to encourage your chicken to stop laying around the same way Friend did, always pick her up from the nest and feed her something. If you keep your chicken outside, take her outside and feed her. Always start petting her as she sits, when you do that long enough, she might leave the nest. After doing this a few times, Friend was skinnier again and her noises were back to normal.

Oh - I meant she lays an egg every day without ever taking a day off. She actually only stays in her nest for a very brief time to pop out a little egg =) She's pretty active and runs around a lot. I'll take your advice under notice for my others though. I'm up to 55 and I'm sure I'll deal with that sooner or later!

Thanks!
