IMG_3666.jpg hey BYC!
My hen was attacked by a hawk 5 days ago (I posted about it then in need of advice). She's doing great! But on day 4 I noticed the skin around one of he sounds looked suspicious.
<let me back up a tad. While I was nursing her back to health and keeping her wounds clean, she stayed in my laundry room. I felt bad she wasn't with the others so I gave her supervised yard time  starting on day 2 post attack.
And again on day 3. BUT the stinker got in the dust bath and filled her "wound shirt" with dirt (looked like a saggy diaper). I immediately cleaned/flushed her wounds. The biggest wound looked great, the small one in her inguinal area however looked dirty and there was a dark color under her skin (like a bruise?) I'm hoping it's not dirt in her body... today (day5) it looks more green than yesterday.
I attached before and after pics, let me know what you think.
*she is acting completely normal*

*Note: I am not an avian veterinarian. I am only speaking my opinion based out of my own experience with major and minor chicken wounds/injuries.

It's not dirt underneath. It does not look infected. (The area around the wound is not swollen/red, which is usually the first sign of infection). However, it defiantly looks like a bruise... (It looks like a larger replica of bruising I have seen on chickens before). I would keep the wounds clean (as you are doing) and apply a topical wound ointment (such as Vetericyn or Neo-sporain). Watch for swelling (that begins or becomes more noticeable after day 3), discoloration, concentrated around the abrasions (particularly red/purple). Also, make sure that the wounds are scabbing over properly. But again, I am not a vet, this is just my opinion. :)

Hope that she heals up well and quickly! :jumpy
I also hope that the hawk doesn't come back! :smack:oops:

Hey! Thanks! Yeah I'm pretty sure it's a bruise too but I am pretty new to this chicken game and wanted to see what others thought. The wounds are healing beautifully AND my vetericyn is due to be delivered any day now!
I also bought chlorhexidine to keep on hand for both my dogs and chickens:)
That hawk better not be back!! Next time I'll jump over the fence and kick it
