This came up on our buff orpington. It's hard, dry, and black. It surrounds the base of feather shafts. No signs of skin irritation or mites or anything that we can see. None of the other girls are affected. We soaked her. A piece came off but left a wound underneath. Any ideas on what it is or how to treat

How much of her body has the hard scabbing? It looks like it is in a line around her side. I am not sure what that might be. Could it be an injury from a spur, or does it look more like an infection?
She has spots all over. Both side and her neck. Her skin is otherwise healthy. No redness, irritation, or trauma. We don't have roosters. No one has been picking on her. A friend of mine just said she thinks it's a fungal infection.

Are there anything around that she could have hurt herself on? She eating? Drinking? Pooping? Laying? Does that "black" crust soaked in water turn red? Thinking maybe dried blood? Does she free range, possible something tried grabbing her? Can you take a picture of the "wound" where the crust came off? Is is open or just red?

She doesn't free range unless we are outside with her. She acts completely normal. No trauma, no attack. She's active, eating, drinking, pooping. She hasn't laid her first egg yet but did recently start squating. The crust doesn't turn red. The would was open and bled. A friend of mine thinks possible fungal infection.

What is the bedding in the coop and is it muddy in the run or around the area they walk around? Was she vaccinated for Mareks disease? Mareks can cause a skin follicle condition, but I would think it would be all over, instead of just in a line. You could try cleaning with Betadine, and applying an antifungal cream, such as miconazole daily. A vet might be of help in trying to find out what this is. It looks a bit like squamous cell cancer, a type of skin cancer, but usually that is in single lesions.

We use sand. She has not been vaccinated.

On Sunday night we found one of our hens with these exact sores! I mean identical.. she passed away the next morning..she was a buff Orpington too! Did you figure out what it was? We cannot for the life of us figure it out but are leaning toward cutaneous mareks!
