Two of my hens were attacked last weekend and have been in the house this past week healing. I had posted for help last weekend, so for those that had followed the previous message...they are doing GREAT! Well, as far the injuries go anyway. I am having a problem with Frenchie losing weight! Initially she wasn't getting enough food because every time she ate near Bandit (the other hen in recovery), Bandit would peck her on the head! She had green poop with lots of water in it. A clear sign she wasn't eating enough. Now I migrated them to an empty guest room and put a casserole dish out with food (I figure if it is big enough she can eat away from Bandit's beak!). Her poop is now a healthy looking, solid one all the time, but it still has a little bit of a dark green shade to it. I tried to feed her a scrambled egg with her feed mixed in, which she likes, but she won't eat all of it. She has chicken ADD. She eats for a few and gets distracted and wanders off!

She pecks around all the time and does eat... I strongly doubt it is a sickness problem. She eats enough that I know she isn't going to starve to death, but she is skinny! I can feel the breast bone when I hold her. She acts normal, is healing great...she just needs to peck Bandit back and eat more! I don't think she has worms (I have even looked at her poop to see if there is any evidence of worms...there wasn't

). She had a really hard molt (she lost nearly ALL of her feather!) and lost some weight then (we attributed it to lack of energy from the molt), but nothing too serious. Her body is healthy enough too heal from the attack, continue growing feathers from the molt, and grown new feathers where many pin feathers were lost in the attack. How an I get weight back on her!

Oh, I guess I should add that she, well both of the recovering birds, are Barred Rocks. I add this since the idea of feeling a Barred Rocks breast bone is a bit different than if it were a big meat bird.

I would worm her with ivermectrin once she feels better. I lost some that were skinny but had no signs of worms in their poop, but after I wormed the others then I saw the worms come out in the poop. So I guess they dont poop them out until they are wormed. Good luck

I hadn't thought about worms being present, but not in the feces. That is a very good point! I haven't heard of ivermectrin either, so I looked it up online. It treats a lot of different kinds of worms/parasites! I have Wazine-17, but it only treats roundworms. I will check the local vet supply for ivermectrin. I have them on their antibiotic still. This morning is their 8th day and I have been reducing the dose the past few days. I am sure I can take them off of it now since there is no sign of infection, right? Should I wait to treat her after she is completely healed (such as scab is gone)? How long after the antibiotic should I wait to insure there won't be any interactions? Thanks so much!
