Skunk odor removal

I saw skunks mentioned in other threads. Folks talked about a 2 week quarantine for dogs that tangled with skunks. Such a quarantine is not needed. This remedy really works (much better than typical solutions like tomato juice). I have bird hunting dogs. They've had several run-ins with skunks. After using this method, you literally have to put your nose in their fur to get any skunk odor...

My dogs were quarantined after a run I with a skunk because the skunk was never found and it seemed unusual that it was out during the day and held a stand off with my two dogs for 1/2 hour. The animal control people feared rabies and therefore home quarantined my dogs. My husbands on and me were all exposed too because they beat the skunk off with a golf club and baseball bat and I washed the dogs afterward.

I did use the concoction you mentioned but my dogs (especially one) was sprayed directly in the face so it was difficult to really soap up and soak around the eyes.

The story is really kind of funny now that I think back. My younger son was about 13-14 and had come home from school to an empty house. He let the dogs out in the back yard and then noticed they were barking. He called me at work to say they were fighting with a skunk. They were tag teaming it and had it surrounded. I told my son to stay in the house in case it was rabid. By the time I got home, it was 1/2 hr later and they were still going at it. I could smell skunk 1/2 mile away from my house. My husband and older son got home the same time I did and beat it off with a golf club and baseball bat. One dog had cuts in her legs and the other was sprayed in the eyes. I had to take them to the vet in my brand new car which I had gotten less than a week ago. Everything stunk for a long time!!

The liquid soap should be a high quality dish soap like dawn. It cuts the oily film and allows it to be washed away.

In a pinch dawn and vinegar rinse work almost as well as the above formula.
