Good morning everyone!

My siblings and I decided to sleep outside on our porch because it's so warm out. So, we let our two labs, Sammi and Dawson, sleep outside with us. It was a perfect night to sleep out; I saw like 4 shooting stars.

Well, around 3am, I wake up to Sammi and Dawson barking. My sister says that she saw a skunk under the porch getting into the trash, and Sammi was down there barking at it. We called her up so she wouldn't be sprayed, but we were obviously too late!

Then, Dawson went down the steps to the trash cans to check it out before we could stop him. He also came back up the porch, smelling just as bad as Sammi!

Also, the skunk had gotten into the trash, which smelled horribly of garlic and something else. We looked down through the cracks of the porch and saw that they skunk was wedged in between the house and a trash can, like it was stuck. So we went down to try and move it a little so he could get out. When he saw us, he started stamping his feet on the ground and sticking his tail up, and was obviously upset and threatened by us. But we managed to quickly move the garbage can. After than, we blocked the stairs so the dogs couldn't go down and bark at the skunk. Once we left him alone, he finally came out from behind the garbage can and left.
Now it's 5:00 am and my brother and I have to stay out on the porch with the dogs so they don't bark and wake the neighbors, since they smell horrible and can't go inside the house. The garlic and skunk smell has started to fade away but it still smells really bad.

I guess we will be giving both Sammi and Dawson lots of baths in tomato sauce.

The skunk stamping it's feet was his warning to you! They do that right before they spray, but lucky for you and your sister, your dogs took the hit! Skunks can spray twice, as they have two spray glands, then they have to recharge.

There is also nothing you can do to take the smell completely away. The tomato juice has acid in it that will act as a neutralizer, but the spray will have to wear off in time.

Vinegar and water. Works better then tomato juice. One of my dogs likes to catch skunks. I asked a dog groomer what to use, and she said vinegar and water. It works better then anything they sell at the pet stores, and tomato juice. I've used it with success ever since

Okay I have to say that 2 summers ago we had a REALL dumb dog. He got sprayed about 10 times in 2 months. No joke.

The only thing that did ANY good was baking soda, perioxide and dish washing soap (Dawn). We would wash him in it twice and byr bye skunk funk.
