So let me first state I have no clue about chicken genetics. Also my chicks aren't old enough to lay eggs let alone make babies. So I'm thinking that I want to create/make a breed/cross/mutt chicken when mine are old enough to do this. I want to make a Silver-Laced Australorp. I have a Silver-Laced Wyandotte cockerel (and pullets) and I have Black Australorp pullets. How would I go about achieving my goal (besides the obvious one of letting the SLW cockerel breed with the Australorp pullets)?

Crossing your birds will not get you a silver-laced Australorp - just a mixed-breed bird. Probably the best first step is for you to spend some time learning genetics and the genes involved in breeding chickens in particular. Here are a few places to start.
