Slaughtering Ducks

Thank you, guys! I still think I'm going to go with slitting the throat. Would a Cutco pocket knife work well? Or would I need something longer. Sorry if these are stupid questions lol, this is my first time killing and skinning any animal ever. Also what kind of sharpeners work best?

So your going skin it and not pluck it? It saves alot of time

Any knife will work, Sharping is as complicated as you want it to be

I sharpen my knives and planer blades with a 3500 rpm cotton buffing wheel and green honing paste, But a leather strop is fine, so is any sharpening stone with the right tecnique

Those store baught V shaped sharpeners are good at ruining edges

But like i seid the olfa box cutter is the sharpest knife your going get, and they are 8$

100% truthfully and honest my favorite knife to use is an olfa knife. Its so sharp you dont have to pull or stress the meat at all
And ive tried and own alot of knivesView attachment 2049398

And i dispatch with a sharpened fiskars hatchetView attachment 2049400
I use a boning knife because it's my sharpest knife. Or my husband snips the head off with pruning shears. I like your idea of a box cutter.

I assume you need to keep the head on if you put it in a plucker? I got a new plucker and was going to test it out on ducks in a few weeks.

I wouldn't use a pocket knife. The thinner the blade, the better. Be sure when you cut. If you hesitate or go 'gentle' you'll just cause more pain. I look for the vein first and then stab in with the tip of the blade the go under the vein and slice up to make sure I sever it. Hard to explain. I was taught to break the neck but I'm no good at it and everyone suffered more. I just put them in the cone and slice. There's jerking around at the end. It's normal in almost all deaths. Or you canxsnip the head off and it'll bleed out fine that way too. Skinning is easy. If they're young anyway.

Thank you! No i'm not going to skin the duck I just meant that this was my first time killing any animal. I think I'll go with the olfa box cutter. Does it need to be sharpened?
