The thermometer says it's 86 degrees. My barred rock and buff orphington are laid out but my Rhode Island Red is not. Do they look like they are sleep or overheating?

Put the light over the end of brooder without food/water.
Measure temp on floor of brooder directly under the light, should be about 90 degrees.
Then measure the temp on the floor of the brooder at the opposite end from the light, should be about 70-80 degrees.
With that small of a container you may only need a 100 watt bulb(uncoated) it doesn't have to be red.
