Sleeping in the rain

I have 6 chickens who are all 4 months old. Their first rainstorm was during the day and they happily played in it. I live in Arizona so I'm not worried about them getting cold. Tonight I went to put my favorite silkie away (she was snuggling with me) to find 4 of my chickens sleeping on the roof of their coop in the pouring rain. We're talking can't-see-the-road-it's-raining-so-hard kind of rain. The only one inside was my other silkie who I assume just could get up that high. Last time it rained they were all too little to get up there at all. I check on them every night and I have absolutely never found them roosting on the roof before tonight. My last flock didn't like the rain and I think I only ever saw one on the roof twice and it was during the day. So is this a weird chicken thing or are my chickens just being weird??

They may have waited too long (close to nightfall) to try to enter the coop, and if it was too dark-looking inside the coop with all the rain clouds, they may have been afraid to enter. This is a young chicken problem that I have seen.

I would check on them nightly for awhile to make sure they don't do that again.
