I moved my chickens outside today! They love it. They're about 6 weeks old (not 100% sure of their ages- my friend raised them from chicks and we got them about a week ago). They look like their feathers are pretty well in the whole way. The low tonight is 45. Do I need to plug in the heat lamp for them or will they be okay?

They will be fine. Chickens produce a lot of heat and handle anything we think is cold, very well.

Yeah, mine are about 7 weeks and are outside in the 30's. They are fine as long as they can get inside and pile together.

We put the heat lamp on because we don't have a draft-free area for them yet. We'll be working on that ASAP.

My husband kept wanting to insulate our chicken coop and we live in Utah, but after reading everything and looking at many coop designs I decided not to insulate and I am glad, they keep the coop VERY warm. And it is with half inch wood...compressed/plywood type stuff, not treated...with air vents and glass windows made out of old picture frames, looks really cute but glass is thin. So I think you are good!
