Hello.
My pet hen (8 month old SA61A sasso hybrid) is over weight.
I love her so much, but apparently i did not love her enough to not stop myself from making her always "happy".
Every evening she comes indoors with me, she comes in my lap and as she made me the angry face when i ate bisquits
I always gave her half, for like, 2 months. Now i have stopped.
I did not realize that a 20g bisquit for a human is nothing but for a chicken is the equivalent of eating a whole cake every day.
She is allowed to go wherever she please on my land during the day.
But, she does eat a lot. she is fed the same 16% protein feed that i make for all my other chickens, which, are fed at-libidum,
and are not fat.
She just... eats a lot. it's been 2 weeks that i don't give her any more treats, if i do, i give her a little piece of cheese or scrambled egg
but, very rarely. I also put her a lot less feed, in smaller doses and multiple time during the day. When she's out, i try to feed her even less
as she is perfectly capable of going everywhere, eating like crazy. spilled grain, seeds, grasses..
Is there something that I can do to help slim her down?
the "manufacturer" claims this "breed" should not exceed 3.4~3.6kg. my hen, weighs 4.2kg.
my knowledge of dieting aside going keto, is that she in theory ingest LESS calories that she requires in order to lose weight.
that's what she used to look like when she was 4 months old, and not obese

If you still need to give her a treat, give her vegetables like kale or grass clippings. Otherwise she will slim down overtime.

and, that she has a fat pad in her belly and the keel bone is hard to feel. thats why i worry
Then cut back on treats and focus on her eating her normal feed along with moving about foraging. Activity will help.
I would not cut out her normal feed, she needs the balanced nutrition.
