So I have a 1 month-old Pekin Duck I desperately need to keep in a sling for his deformed legs to not get worse and have to be put out of his misery. I have made three different slings. I get him in them. It looks great for his legs and comfortable for food and water and he’s with his friends... if I take my hand off him, within 4 seconds he rolls to one side, pulls a leg through the small leg hole, rolls back onto it and pulls his other leg through. Now I have a “crippled” duck 12in up ready to just stumble fall.
I have tried making the towel with leg holes that he’s in a deep pocket (loose) and basically a trampoline (taunt). Same result. I have made a seat belt that holds his back down, but it can’t stop this roll-n-pull technique. I have clipped the sling itself around his back like a suspended duck burrito, but this dang smart duck... every time, 15 seconds max.
It would be absolutely hilarious and I would think he doesn’t need it with that much fight and leg strength, but his legs twist inwards so badly now it is difficult and painful for him to walk. His brother had the same issue and we had to already end that this week
I’m going to try attaching a kind of wide boot or using me dial tape to put on popsicle stick long ways to his ankles once he is in so he can’t pull them through the leg hole opening, but I’m not hopeful it will do anything but slow his technique down. He is super strong and let’s face it, smarter than a duck. We haven’t given up on him because he has never given up and unfortunately, that’s what the problem is.
Any ideas? Alternatives? Any advice? Or are we basically just enjoying the very short time he has left before we have to end it?
