On The Rolling Plains of Dixie
We started out with a set of plans drawn on a sheet of paper inspired by many coops that we saw on BackYardChickens! Used our tractor post hole digger and auger to dig holes for treated 4x4 posts. Buried Hardware Cloth and heavy gauge fencing around the perimeter of the foundation.

Framed a knee-wall for the raised part of the coop and added Hardware Cloth and trimmed it in securely. We decided on a Board and Batten Siding for the front and the west side of the coop for a couple of reasons; 1.) It looks good. 2.) We had some left over from the Barn Build!

Had an old Door in the Barn and Mrs Slippy felt like it would go well with the Coop...Had a Blast (Sarcasm!) fixing the old door, squaring it up and inserting a number of metal plates in it. Added Hardware Cloth as well to the door. Felt like an Orthopedic Surgeon fixing up a banged up patient! But in the end it looks and fit great!

The back of the Coop is simply 1x8 treated boards that we had lying around. Gotta stay on budget! The Paint was also left over from the Barn, Sherwin Williams Barn Red...if you're wondering! Trim paint was also from our house build but that was nearly 10 years ago but surprisingly the paint was still...OK ish! Will have to buy some more to finish the job. Good to have a "Boneyard" of Materials on the Slippy Homestead!

Also had an old Stainglass Window that I framed up and inserted into the front of the Coop. Looks pretty good if I say so myself! Painted the Door Haint Blue! (Had to buy that!)

We had some leftover Metal Roofing from our Barn so I cut a few pieces and will finish the Roof tomorrow. Also hoping to start building an Extended Chicken Run portion tomorrow. It will be to the Left looking at the Door of the Coop. Along the entire build, we have paid close attention to making sure everything is Predator Proof. It doesn't hurt that our soil is Rocky and Hard!

Hopefully by next week I'll have the interior Roosting and Nesting areas of the Coop started.

Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Slippy! :frow

Looks Pretty Good!

Will the coop portion have a raised solid floor?
Just curious about the mesh panels under the solid panels.
I could just be patient and wait and see :D

Oh, and .... Welcome to BYC! @Slippy
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

Hey @aart

Thanks for the welcome and positive feedback!! I am in The Heart of Dixie not too far from Auburn, AL.

And Yes, my plan is to build a raised floor for nesting boxes etc in about half of the Covered Coop area. The other half of the Coop will be for roosting and food/water. I wanted to have plenty of ventilation as well as an area for the chickens to go underneath.

I have a Rainwater Catchment System on our house and I'll do a similar one on the Coop for the chickens.

It looks a little deceiving with the siding on the front of the Coop going from ground to ceiling height but I did that for no other reason than aesthetics. (In other words, that's how my wife wanted it! :bow)

Be well!

Did a little bit of trim work this morning then shored up a few areas that needed some Hardware Cloth. Also painted the wall adjacent to the Run.

Nice to see that I had a Red Cattle Dog looking over my work today! It was glorious to be out working with a good friend!

Framed out the Chicken Run, attached Hardware Cloth, painted and trimmed out the Run!
(I'd rather fight 3 drunk monkeys than mess with 4' Hardware Cloth!

Had an extra Wooden Gadsden Flag so what the heck! Hung it on the back of the Coop to let predators know Not To Tread on My Chickens!...or else!

My work mate looks like she is tired! Why not a nap on the porch? Great day working on the Coop/Run. Tomorrow I'll work on the Dust Bath area and some Roosting Beams!
