Chirping
We started out with a set of plans drawn on a sheet of paper inspired by many coops that we saw on BackYardChickens! Used our tractor post hole digger and auger to dig holes for treated 4x4 posts. Buried Hardware Cloth and heavy gauge fencing around the perimeter of the foundation.
Framed a knee-wall for the raised part of the coop and added Hardware Cloth and trimmed it in securely. We decided on a Board and Batten Siding for the front and the west side of the coop for a couple of reasons; 1.) It looks good. 2.) We had some left over from the Barn Build!
Had an old Door in the Barn and Mrs Slippy felt like it would go well with the Coop...Had a Blast (Sarcasm!) fixing the old door, squaring it up and inserting a number of metal plates in it. Added Hardware Cloth as well to the door. Felt like an Orthopedic Surgeon fixing up a banged up patient! But in the end it looks and fit great!
The back of the Coop is simply 1x8 treated boards that we had lying around. Gotta stay on budget! The Paint was also left over from the Barn, Sherwin Williams Barn Red...if you're wondering! Trim paint was also from our house build but that was nearly 10 years ago but surprisingly the paint was still...OK ish! Will have to buy some more to finish the job. Good to have a "Boneyard" of Materials on the Slippy Homestead!
Also had an old Stainglass Window that I framed up and inserted into the front of the Coop. Looks pretty good if I say so myself! Painted the Door Haint Blue! (Had to buy that!)
We had some leftover Metal Roofing from our Barn so I cut a few pieces and will finish the Roof tomorrow. Also hoping to start building an Extended Chicken Run portion tomorrow. It will be to the Left looking at the Door of the Coop. Along the entire build, we have paid close attention to making sure everything is Predator Proof. It doesn't hurt that our soil is Rocky and Hard!
Hopefully by next week I'll have the interior Roosting and Nesting areas of the Coop started.
Any suggestions will be appreciated!
