My silkie hen finally started to lay eggs the past two weeks. Three days ago she laid an egg. She sat on it for a good hour, and left it. Never went back to the egg. Today, she laid another egg, again stayed with it for a good hour or two, and then left it. She of course acted protective over her egg when other hens came around. She would peck and pretty much do the egg song a few times. Thats it. I left the egg alone over night the other day, but she never went back to it. This is my first time 'breeding' silkie's. I went ahead and placed the two eggs I was able to save and have them cooking in the incubator. One egg that is three days old has no veins. Is there good info or trouble shooting on breeding chickens?

Ok, new tactic. I placed a box with shavings in it on the spot where she's been laying her eggs. She made a little nest in the corner on the floor. I placed that box there hoping that might help give her some privacy from the other hens. I'm thinking maybe the other hens have been bothering her too much that made her more nervous to sit on her eggs. Hopefully that will help. But I'm wondering if she's laying bad eggs. We have a silkie roo, but I don't know if he's been breeding them or not.

Even a silkie doesn't always go broody. If she isn't sitting she isn't broody. I would crack open a few eggs to look for the bulls eye, to know for sure if the rooster is getting the job done. Three days incubation may not be enough time to see development.

I have two Silkie hens that aren't at all broody at the moment. They keep laying eggs in a little makeshift nest (or atleast one of them does), but won't sit on them. It happens...

Thank you for responding. I keep getting excited seeing her sitting on an egg, but then let down that she doesn't stay with it. I want baby silkies so badly, but I guess I'll have to keep waiting or get a few more hens. I thought about buying hatching eggs on Ebay or at our local feedmill who orders eggs. I just wish there are closer people who sell fertile silkie eggs around me. lol
