Slow exposure to the coop soil

About the getting dirt from the run...where I am, the run in still under several feet of snow. I use the deep litter method in my coop. If I wanted to try this, can I take a small amount of the nearly composted shavings from inside my coop instead?

I have never used the deep litter method living in Louisiana, but I see no reason why that would be any different than a scoop of soil. That is what I would do.

I always give them a clump of grass with the dirt and roots and have never had any problems withthe chicks they love it
