I have two Red male 8 week old chickens that have taken forever to feather. They are still just barely growing feathers on the back and under their wings. I had read that Red Leghorns are particularly slow to feather (males). But I am not sure if New Hampshire and RIR are as well. Can somebody give me some insight.

Thanks much!

I raise RIR and have raised a few nhReds and they are usually feathered pretty good come 8 weeks.I have some now that are 10 weeks and as soon as I can I will post picks to show you.

Thanks very much!

I thought so too (about the late feathering for NH and RIR) I am leaning even more toward the Leghorn. But I know very little about them, so it is hard to say. And although they say that they feather slowly, it is really a relative thing. No length of time was actually given. My two boys look so pitiful still at 8 1/2 weeks. But it is happening, just slowwwwwwwwwly.

Many breeds who have Asiatik blood show slow feathering.RIR have it.NHR no too much-they are selected for fast feathering. But no only male can have slowfeathering genes -females too
