Beer seems to attract ants, flies, and other nasties more than it does slugs. The slugs out here in the PNW are the size of a pink pearl eraser, with the largest being the size of half a jumbo egg sliced in half when scrunched. So big that when I was little, I'd coat them in a pyramid of salt and they'd just slither out smaller than they were when I covered them.
I prefer taking a pointy stick out at night, stabbing all the ones I can find, and repeating as the dead slugs do wonders at attracting the live ones. Reducing shady spots also helps and putting plants like ruhbarb far away from other leafy greens is a good idea, since ruhbarb harbors the little suckers.
I say drink that beer and stab the slugs with a stick. Filled a one gallon jar with slugs that way once.
