I had a SLW Rooster - he is gone now, was a bit of an angry bird and a pain in the butt - that I let mate with some BR's, LB's, GLS's and a Cochin that I have. Mainly I wanted to see what kind of cross I would get. I read that A SLW and a BR would make a BSL, but it seems that every breed my SLW matted with turned out to be a BLS even the White Cochin's chick. They all came out looking like little penguins, black chicks with a white patch on their chests and butt, very dark legs with black wash down the front. The Male chicks with a white spot on their heads and only have the black wash on their feet. 7 chicks have hatch and most have the rose comb one has a single comb and none have feathered legs.

So does this mean if a SLW mates with any breed besides a Wyandotte your going to get a BSL?

No, You can only get Black Sexlinks by mating him to the barred Rock hens ( or any barred/cuckoo hens) If by the slight chance the white cochin was masking barring, then she would work too, but no way you could have gotted BSL chicks from the Brahma or other hens. The hens have to be barred in order to produce BSLs and any color rooster will work as long as he is not barred and not Dom white.

I have to ask,
Is LB's, Lemon Blues, Light Brahmas or something else?
Also, what is GSL?

Chris LB is light Brahma and GSL is Gold Sex-Link.

I will post some pics of the chicks when I get them transfered to the PC, but my Cochin is completely white and a bantam so I know without a dought which chick is hers and the chick looks just like the others just much smaller. I did not think a SLW and Cochin would create a black chick, but they did. Anyway, I will post some pics and ya'll can let me know what you think.

Here is a pic of the SLW/ Bantam Cochin cross chick. I don't know you tell me Black Sex-Link? I know the pic is not great and I will try and post some more later when I get time. But it looks like a BSL to me. She had two of her eggs under her, one got crushed before it could hatch, but it look the same.

Here is Tweety with one of the SLW/BR crosses.

They don't look like Sex links to me. The White cochin he is mostlikley masking black or something, that is way they can easily produce black chicks.

My Cochin only hatched out one of her eggs and that is the chick in the bottom pic. The other black chicks are Silver Laced Wyandotte Roo and Barred Rock Hen cross so they should be BSLs. Maybe Tweety is masking black, but would that cause the chick; really both chicks of hers to come out looking just like the SLW/BR crosses? All the black chicks have dark legs with black wash down the front, and whiteish patches on the breast and butt. Three of the chicks have a white spot on the top of their heads - males I am guessing. It just seems odd to me that the Cochin chicks would come out the same.

Well like I said eariler, it may be possible that she is masking barring in which case she could produce sexlinks. With white birds like that from Cochins, Silkies, etc, you never know what they are masking until you breed them.

I guess I will have just have to wait and see what they grow up to be. I am going to say Tweetys chick is a pullet because of no white spot on the head. It'll be interesting to see if that is correct or not. At least they are all healthy happy chicks.
