I have several cockerels that have what looks like a pea comb, and some that seem to have a single comb.... which is "correct" They were purchased in a cockrel assortment.

I got the assortment for 1) to eat or 2) to save some good cockerels and start on that breed.
I like the SLW coloring, but which is the "best" comb according to standard??

Thanks y'all

Wyandottes have a Rose Comb not a Pea Comb. It is common in Wyandotte breeding programs to have the occasional Single Combed offspring however they should not be used in the breeding program. You need to get a copy of the American Poultry Associations Standard of Perfection if you are going to start breeding. This book will tell you everything regarding the Wyandotte standard.

Good Luck

You're right, I do, but as this is for only my benefit (not becoming a breeder to others), I knew someone could answer me.

Silver Laced Wyandottes were once all over the place but quality SLWs are becoming very rare. Even if you are just breeding for your own pleasure I would suggest breeding as close to the standard as possible. I love the SLWs as well and I am getting hatching eggs from a breeder this spring and his stock is BEAUTIFUL.

Good Luck
