I had a SLW Roo on a BCM/RIR mix.
This is one of five chicks hatched out on 4/13.
Another that looks just like it, but w/ Wyandotte rose comb, is (I'm nearly certain) a Roo.
Not sure about this one though...What do y'all think?
I'll post pics of the other when I can get a good shot.
THX!
I'm leaning towards cockerel. That comb and those wattles are a little too red for me to guess pullet, especially on a bird that is just over a month old.
Ha! So far 50/50! This is one of five chicks hatched out. It would be great if only ONE was a baby Roo! But I'm just not sure! The other three chicks are showing almost no comb yet at all.
I'm wondering if the sex-link works backwards?? Usually it is Red/Black Roo + Barred/Laced Hen = Blond male chicks & Black females?
BUT if we have the parents reversed would the chicks be reversed too?? Anyone have good genetics background?
The gold to silver sex links do work backwards but the pullets[silver] will be much closer in color to the cockerels[silver/gold mix], making it harder to tell which is which.
Also the Marans blood makes your hen also throw fully black chicks of both sexes, in this case, which messes up the link anyway.
Ah-that explains it. Thank you! It seems I may have lucked out w/ only one roo in the bunch. Still not entirely sure about this one. The black roo chick with the rose comb has significantly more developed comb and wattles & thicker legs. The other three chicks are not showing combs/wattles at all yet.
The colors cannot be used in reverse.
A silver male cannot be used in a red sex link cross, the male MUST have a gold gene.
A pure barred hen is required for a black sex link cross, the male's color is not as specific.
Here's a great post with lots of info on sex linking : https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/261208/sex-linked-information
