I have a friend who's eggs always look like this. What's going on?

They are known as blood spots or meat spots and are completely harmless. In commercial operations big automatic candling machines are used to identify eggs with them in, and they get graded B rather than A (only As allowed in cartons of eggs for sale to the public, in UK at least), so people who only eat shop eggs never see them.
