I really like some of the small coop designs that are posted, but I live in northern Wisconsin and am concerned about winter cold. Is there a design for 4-6 birds that is an elevated coop with small integrated run, but is insulated for a northern climate?

I live in Ontario where our winters routinely get to below -20 Celcius. Cold! I had the same concerns as you at the start and even thought about putting in heat. Having a couple of winters behind me now, I am comfortable having an uninsulated coop with no heat. I haven`t lost one yet to cold. Mind you I have large bodied breeds such as Wyandottes, RIR and Chanteclers. I could not get my head around insulating and then providing ventilation which is more important for their well being as it lets out the humidity.

Here's the coop I built for my bantams (but could serve LF as well). It's insulated w/R13 fiberglass insulation. You can insulate anything, as long as you leave ventilation and take into account that insulated takes away from your overall sq.footage. Mine is about 4x5 (the housing section), but due to the insulation, only has about 18 sq. ft. of interior space. Because it's a small coop, I did wall mount the next boxes so it didn't take away from floor space. What I like about my run is that it's very easy to winterize - fabric stores typically sell clear vinyl 'cloth' used to cover picnic tables and such that you can wrap the run walls with to keep snow out so that you don't have to shovel and they can come out...
I screw thick plexiglass "windows" (inside and out for double-paned effect) over the window openings in the winter. Something as simple as a clay pot heater w/a 100 W bulb bumps up the interior 10 -15 degrees for cold nights.
Negatives with this type though: Cleaning and maintenance inside the housing means you have to leave the door open during that time, whereas a walk-in you go inside quickly and shut the door...
